Example of the digital control modification for the power supply Auto shift of overcurrent protection (OCP) point level.

When a failure occurs in the application and heat of the electric wire is generated due to the overcurrent of the load, is there a way to limit the overcurrent to prevent abnormal heat generation of the wire?

By the auto shift function, overcurrent protection(OCP) point level is changed to suppresses the output current. As a result, heat generation is prevented.

Auto shift of overcurrent protection (OCP) point level.

The power supply has an overcurrent protection (OCP) function that limits the output current so that it does not exceed a specified value. The OCP operating point is set higher than the rated output current of the power supply. If a large current flows due to an abnormal load, the power supply limits the output current through the protection function.

For loads such as fans, where the startup current is higher than the steady‑state operating current, a power supply with sufficient capacity should be selected.

When an abnormal condition occurs in the application and excessive current flows, the OCP function limits the output current, but the abnormal current continues to flow from the power supply (Fig. 1).
In some cases, the abnormal current may continue at a level lower than the OCP point but higher than the rated current (Fig. 2).

If the wire thickness is selected based only on the continuous current rating, it may not be sufficient for the higher current level that occurs during an abnormal condition. This can lead to overheating, wire damage, or secondary failures.

The concept of the OCP auto‑shift function is to automatically switch the OCP point to the programmed setting by detecting the operating time. This function makes it possible to achieve both peak‑current capability at start‑up and current limiting during abnormal conditions by switching the OCP operating point between the start‑up phase and steady‑state operation.
